Location: South Africa » Free State » Vrede

After a dispute on where to establish a new township was settled in 1863, first European landowners of this area named it Vrede (peace). Today Vrede finds itself at the hub of a 10 000 ha region of agricultural plenty, including the Free State’s largest stock fairs of maize, wheat, mutton, wool, beef, dairy products and poultry. The beautiful of Vrede, surrounded by a vast agricultural region, occupies a valley in the north-eastern corner of Free State.

One wonders how a gun used in South West Africa (Namibia) during the First World War found it’s last resting place at Vrede.

Granite Monument

The huge granite monument built in 1938 commemorating the Ox wagon Trek of 1838.

Sheep House

Cnr Van der Lingen & Market Street. During the War, British troops killed flocks of sheep and stored them in this house.

War Memorials

In front of the Dutch Reformed Church features a Burghers Memorial to fallen Boers and a Memorial Garden to honour British soldiers.

ATTRACTIONS

Vrede Dam

Just outside the town is the Vrede Dam, called Vrede Marina, often frequented by visitors from as far as Gauteng. Recreation consists mainly of fishing, water skiing and speed boats.
