De Beer’s Ventia Diamond Mine is presently the largest producer of diamonds in South Africa. Surrounding the mine is the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve of 40 000 ha. Another landmark is the fabled Mapungubwe ruins, where gold artifacts and royal graves have been found dating from a 13th century African Kingdom. A golden rhinocerous, bowl and royal sceptre are on display at the University of Pretoria. The area is also rich in San rock art.
