Named after two government officials, Messrs Hope and Field, who surveyed the first residential stands on the farm Langkuil in 1852, Hopefield is well known for it’s fynbos , and visitors flock to the town in spring when the flowers area in full bloom.

How to get there

Cape Town 120 km, Vredenburg 40 km, Langebaan, Velddrif, Moorreesburg and Hopefield can also be reached via the R27 west coast road or the N7 highway.

HISTORICAL VIEW

Archaeological Finds

Fossil displays at the Tourism Bureau, with a cast of the Saldanha Man. Archaeological site at Elandsfontein, 13 km from Hopefield. Since the first excavations in 1951, more than 20 000 fossil bones and 5000 artifacts from the Early Stone Age have been uncovered. Most remarkable are the fragments of an early human skull. Bearing a resemblance to that of Neanderthal Man, it has since become known as the Hopefield Man or Saldanha Man. Other remains include that of two extinct species of giraffe, buffalo, lions, baboons, the saber-toothed tiger, elephant etc. Visit by appointment.

Langrietvlei

A lovely, gabled homestead built in 1789 and declared a National Monument, boasts a Guernsey and Hereford stud, a honey farm and hiking trails.

Dutch Reformed Church

In the centre of town, built in 1879.

Hartbeeshuisie

(wattle-and-daud hut)

A replica of the original reed-built homes of the area. Relic of the nomadic existence of the first farmers, who in constant search for better grazing, were always on the move.

Situated between Hopefield and Velddrif, 30 km in length. The two routes may be combined. Vlei environment on the banks of the Berg River. Beautiful flowers, birds and wildlife. Wild horses can also be seen. Best time – spring.

Kersboschdam Hiking Trail

Three routes of 5 km, 15 km and 23 km – major attractions like fynbos, game and birdlife. Best time – spring.
