Ellisras is a composition of the two owners of the farm, Patrick Ellis and Piet Erasmus. It has now been renamed to Lephalale. Lephalale (Ellisras) is in the heart of the bushveld and due to the rich diversity of in the area, draws trophy hunters from all over the world. Game farming and cattle ranching are two of the most important agricultural activities and the principal crops are groundnuts and tobacco. Lephalale (Ellisras) is possibly best known for Iscor’s huge open cast colliery, which feeds the largest direct dry cooled power station in the world. The coal was discovered on the farm Grootgeluk (good luck) during drilling operations for water in the 1920’s. The reserves are unimaginably large and it is estimated that at least half the country’s coal is found in this neighbourhood.
