On the far northern border of South Africa lies a beautiful area known as the Great Marico and it is in this spectacular setting, in Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve, that Tau Game Lodge is situated. The jumbled hillocks of Tshwene-Tshwene and the dramatic ridge of the Dwarsberg Mountains expose rocks of up to 2630 million years old and artifacts of the Stone and Iron Ages are still found in the Great Marico dust.

Privately owned Tau Game Lodge was built in 1995 and overlooks a vast natural waterhole, which attracts a variety of game, as does the diverse vegetation which thrives in the fertile topsoil.
The lodge was designed to reflect the natural surroundings and makes use of the natural resources wherever possible.

The main body of the Lodge is two-leveled and has a comfortable lounge, conference facilities, bar and dinning-room which are semi open-air and overlook the waterhole.

Delicious buffet breakfasts and lunches are generally served in the main building or on the verandah next to the plunge pool and dinner is served in a cosy boma under the stars.
Situated at an easy 4 hours driving distance from Johannesburg, Tau, the place of the lion, can host and accommodate up to 60 people.

The décor and furnishings of Tau Game Lodge are Africa-inspired and the rooms are equipped with both air-conditioning and ceiling fans.

Thirty rustic thatched chalets are spread out in U-formation on either side of the lodge, offering excellent views of animals approaching the water from the opposite bank.

Each chalet has its own wooden game viewing deck, which allows one to experience the bush in privacy and is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and open-air shower.

Each of the two corner units, on either side of (and furthest away from) the lodge, have been linked with the next-door unit by a communal outdoor lounge. These chalets can be utilised for two couples traveling together or for parents with small children sharing the room.

BY CAR: 360 km from Johannesburg, an easy 4 hour drive on National roads (see map) The Parksboard charges a conservation levy of R25-40 per person on entering the park.DIRECTIONS (3.5 hour shortcut): Travel to Fourways shopping centre via Rivonia or N1 South. Take direction to Hartbeespoort Dam. Keep on going straight and then turn left onto the N14 highway in the Krugerdorp direction. Travel Southwest for a while. At the four-way stop, turn right onto the N14 towards Ventersdorp. At the T-junction turn right into the direction of Ventersdorp / Hekpoort. The road then splits again, take the left fork in the Ventersdorp direction. Follow this direction for some time until you arrive at a four way junction. Turn right in the Rustenburg direction. Pass the town Magaliesburg and take the left fork in the road, the R509 to Boons and Derby (+53km) Proceed through Derby, towards Koster (+17km) In Koster, turn right towards Swartruggens (R509 for 34km). Turn left at the stop street onto the N4 to Swartruggens, Groot Marico and Zeerust. In zeerust, turn right at President street onto the R47/R49 to Gaborone. Travel to the Kopfontein Border Post, bypassing 2 gates to Madikwe Game Reserve. Turn right onto the sand road (Direction Derdepoort) just before the border post and follow the road for approximately 10km to Tau Lodge Gate. Tau Game Lodge is a two hour drive from Sun City and 28km from Gaborone Airport in Botswana. BY COACH/ MINIBUS: Transfers / charters on request .BY AIR: Daily scheduled flights with Air Botswana to Gaborone from Johannesburg International Airport. Transfers from the Airport to Tau can be organised by tour operators at an extre cost. Daily scheduled flights depart from Johannesburg International Airport at 12H00 and currently cost R2350.00 per person, return. Private air charters to the Madikwe Airstrip on request.
